1962 New York Mets First Game In Franchise History Scorecard
Displayed is a fully completed scorecard from the first regular season game in the history of the New York Mets - played on April 11, 1962, an away game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis against the Cardinals. The Mets first game was supposed to be the previous night in St. Louis, but the game was rained out. The Mets were an expansion team, and they were designed to fill the void in New York City with both of the city's National League teams, the Dodgers and the Giants, moved to California after the 1957 season. In order to generate fan support, the Mets stocked their team will older name players who were past their prime but still big names to New York fans, such as Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, Gus Bell, and Frank Thomas (the original Frank Thomas). The Mets also tried to use players who had played in New York, and the team started four former Brooklyn Dodgers in this first-ever Mets' game: Charlie Neal at second base; Don Zimmer at third base; Hall of Famer Gil Hodges at first base; and Roger Craig on the mound. Great Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial went three-for-three in this game as the Cardinals defeated the Mets 11-4. Craig took the loss for New York and Larry Jackson, the Cardinals' starter, took the win. The Cardinals lineup also included Hall of Famer Minnie Minoso in left field. Neal and Hodges homered for the Mets. New York was managed by Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. The four-page scorecard has an attractive, multi-colored cover featuring the Cardinals' bright red, aviary mascot. On the top upper left is printed "Home Game No. 1." The heavy card stock pages measure 7.5x11". The scorecard sold for ten cents. Inside, the game has been carefully scored in blue pen, and the famous names on both teams bring back the nostalgia of the time when the Mets made their debut. The scorecard exhibits a slight bit of toning, but overall, it is in excellent condition, and the neatly scored game makes the years seem to fly on by, and both the scorecard and the Mets' first game come alive again.
