1963 NBA All-Star Game Multi-Signed Program w/Russell (Beckett)
Displayed is a 13th Annual N.B.A. All-Star Game multi-signed program for the Jan. 16, 1963, contest played at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. The Boston Celtics' Red Auerbach coached the East and the Los Angeles Lakers' Fred Shaus coached the West. The program contains the signatures of four Hall of Famers: Walt Bellamy, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, and Tom Heinsohn. The approx. 8.5x11" program has 34 pages, including the 2-page All-Star line-up insert, and in addition to the four Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer signatures, it contains the autographs of nine other celebrities, including N.B.A. referee Sid Borgia, and NBA players Tom Meschery and Walt Hazzard. Most of the signatures were made in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The East won the All-Star game over the West by a 115-108 score. Oscar Robertson led the East in scoring with 21 points, and in assists, with six. Boston center Bill Russell had a superb game, with 19 points and a game leading 24 rebounds. For the West, St. Louis forward Bob Petit was the game's top scorer, with 27 points. San Francisco center Wilt Chamberlain added 17 points and led the West in rebounds, with 19. Los Angeles forward Elgin Baylor led the West in assists with seven, and he added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Essentially, the host team for the All-Star Game, the Lakers, took their regular program, put on a new cover, front and back, and added a 2-page (front and back) All-Star lineup insert. The insert is in the program, but it has become loose from its staples. The program exhibits some fading, a few small stains, and a few, very small holes near the edges. The offering comes with a Beckett LOA (certification #AA46305) for the signatures.
