1963 San Diego Chargers AFL Championship Ring
The San Diego Chargers had only been in existence for four years when they captured their only AFL championship in 1963, routing the Boston Patriots for the crown. Here's a dazzling artifact from that notable season. The face of the ring has a genuine diamond set in a blue, football-shaped stone. Words encircling the stone read: “SAN DIEGO CHARGERS 1963 WORLD CHAMPIONS.” On one shank, the name COPLEY appears above a player carrying a ball over the state of California. The other has a Chargers logo with “San Diego 51, Boston 10” written above and “AFL” below. Inside the band is a stamp of Jostens’ logo (J inside a diamond) and “10k.” The ring - which measures 7.5 - originates from the estate of James Copley, owner of the Union-Tribune Publishing Co. and Minority Owner of the Chargers beginning in April of that year. The 1963 Chargers remain the only AFL team to go undefeated against all four teams that made the playoffs in a season.
