1964 Bill Mazeroski Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Road Jersey MEARS A9.5

1964 Bill Mazeroski Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Road Jersey MEARS A9.5

Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey worn by Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski in 1964. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. Mazeroski jerseys are scarce, especially high grade examples such as this. This is the first we have offered in the past twenty-two years and we have seen only a few others at auction during that time. The gray vest-style flannel jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front, with the number "9" featured on both the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold felt. A "MacGregor 44" label appears in the collar. Located on the interior left button flap is a second "MacGregor" label lettered "Set 2 1964." The jersey, which is original as issued, displays heavy wear, including fraying and light tearing to the black-and-gold piping along the collar and arm holes. Mazeroski, who is best known for his famous ninth-inning walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, was one of the steadiest players in baseball during his seventeen-year career (1955-1972). 1964 was no exception, as he finished the year with 10 home runs 64 RBI, and a .268 batting average. Those numbers were each slightly better than his lifetime seasonal averages of 8 home runs, 50 RBI, and .260 average. Mazeroski also appeared in his sixth All-Star Game and won his fifth (out of an eventual eight) Gold Glove Awards in 1964. One of the top defensive second baseman of his era, Mazeroski was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001. MEARS has graded the jersey A9.5 (out of 10), with just a half-point deduction for the frayed piping. This is an outstanding high-grade Mazeroski jersey dating from the prime of his career.
