1964 Cassius Clay & Sonji Roi Visit "Muhammad Speaks Newspaper" Original Photograph (PSA Type I)
1964 photograph captures Muhammad Ali in a setting that would impact his life perhaps more than his elite boxing skill. Black and white photo measures 8x6.5" and shows Ali and his first wife, Sonji Roi, entering the offices of the newspaper, Muhammad Speaks, in New York. Editor's marks are on the back along with a date stamp of October 31, 1964, and a caption dated October 19 reading, "Cassisus Clay and his wife calling at the offices of the 'Black Muslim' newspaper, Muhammad Speaks, on 130th Street and Lenox, Harlem, New York - NEW YORK SERVICE. SPECIAL." In some interesting footnotes, though he is referred to as Clay both in the caption and the PSA encapsulation, he had officially changed his name in March of that year. Also in the photo is a portrait in the window of spiritual leader and National of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, who was instrumental in Ali's conversion to the Muslim faith and, in fact, "gave" him his new name.
