1964 John Keane Signed Managerial Contract - Championship Season

1964 John Keane Signed Managerial Contract - Championship Season

Some people can't get a break. Keane was beaned while he was playing in the Cardinals minor league farm system in the 1930's (which essentially ended his playing career), fired shortly after managing St. Louis to a World Series title in 1964, and perished at age fifty-five one month after accepting a scouting position with the California Angels. Here is Keane's four-page "National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Uniform Manger's Contract" for that historic season which paid him a salary of $35,000. It is signed by Keane, Cardinals GM Vaughan Devine (the architect of two Cardinals championship teams and the 1969 Miracle Mets) and N.L. President Warren Giles, with N.L. date stamp on the back page. The contract (with customary folds) and signatures are NRMT.
