1966 Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground Fillmore Poster (First Printing)

1966 Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground Fillmore Poster (First Printing)

One of the most iconic artists, rock bands, and venues team up to make this poster advertising a concert for Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground at The Fillmore in San Francisco truly spectacular. The psychedelic poster by Wes Wilson is for Warhol's multimedia show "Exploding Plastic Inevitable," headlined by The Velvet Underground and Nico on May 27, 28, and 29 of 1966. The show was put on by Warhol and Danny Williams - a pioneer in rock concert light shows - and featured uninhibited dancing, both in the crowd and on stage, amid dazzling displays. Warhol would later illustrate one of the most renowned album covers of all time for The Velvet Underground - simply a banana in his trademark pop-art style on a stark, white background - for their eponymous record, The Velvet Underground & Nico. This poster is definitively a first printing based on the markings. It has a couple of tape stains and two pinholes at the top, but is otherwise really nice, having recently been discovered in a Massachusetts antique shop. The poster is one of the most desirable Fillmore's, as the concert was one of the most memorable in the history of the venue.
