1966 "Glory Road" NCAA Basketball Championship Program
Presented is a program from the historic "Glory Road" 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship at Cole Field House at College Park, Maryland on March 19, 1966, when the underdog Texas Western Miners defeated the favored University of Kentucky by 72-65. Kentucky featured All-American guards Pat Riley and Louis Dampier and it was still an all-white team, and Texas Western was a racially mixed team that started five African American players. The Texas Western triumph was the first time a basketball team with an all-African American starting lineup had won the National Championship. Many commentators are convinced that the Texas Western victory opened the door for many more African American players to play college basketball. Fifty years after the game, a 2006 movie, Glory Road, was released, and the film commemorated the game, but employed some exaggeration. The movie showed Texas Western to be playing its home games in a small, almost high school like gym, when in reality, they had a fine college arena and played before thousands of fans, The movie also depicted Don Haskins as a rookie coach, when in reality he was in his fifth season as a college head coach. Also, Texas Western wasn't, as indicated in the film, an unknown. The team had won 18 games the season before and they had outstanding players such as promising sophomore Willie Worsley, a terrific 5'6" guard from the Bronx, in New York City, and David Lattin, a 6'6" center who had transferred from Tennessee State. Both Worsley and Lattin later played professional basketball. Despite a number of other falsities and exaggerations, the movie did portray a seminal event in basketball, and civil rights, history. The program measures 8.5x11". It has staple holes on the front. It is unscored. There are a few smudges and some tiny stains. Despite some expected darkening, the program is in excellent condition.
