1967 Super Bowl I Ticket Stub PSA FR 1.5
Presented is an opportunity to own a ticket stub to the first AFL-NFL Championship Game held on January 15, 1967, between the AFL Champion Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL Champion Green Bay Packers. This game in retrospect became known as Super Bowl I, although the post season playoff game between the AFL and NFL Champions was not officially known as the Super Bowl until the third consecutive contest, now called Super Bowl III. The Jan. 15th Championship game was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with a seating capacity of 75,000, but a crowd of only about 50,000 attended this 1967 Championship. The Packers, coached by Vince Lombardi, were 14-point favorites. The players on each team felt great pressure. Kansas City, coached by Hank Stram, felt the pressure from the whole AFL to prove that the new league was the equal of the NFL, and the Green Bay players felt great pressure to uphold the majority opinion that their league was superior to the new circuit. The game was close in the first half, and Green Bay led 14-10 as the second half began. A 50-yard touchdown return of an intercepted pass by the Packers' Willie Wood to the Kansas City 5-yard line started a Green Bay surge that led to three consecutive touchdowns and a 35-10 win. Packer quarterback Bart Starr was the game's MVP with 16 for 23 passing, for 250 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Back-up wide receiver Max McGee of the Packers was an unexpected star. He admitted spending most of the night before the game partying as he didn't expect to play. Pressed into duty by an injury, McGee was brilliant, catching seven passes for two touchdowns and 138 yards. The AFL would not win this championship game until 1969, the first year it was officially called a Super Bowl, when New York Jet quarterback Joe Namath led the Jets to a 16-7 victory over the Baltimore Colts. The ticket measures 2.75x5.25" and shows a price of only $12.00, and it is encapsulated and graded PSA FR 1.5. The 1967 Championship Game grew year by year as the newly named Super Bowl became a national phenomenon. As television journalist Bob Schieffer said, "The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It's part of our culture, like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas, and like those holidays, beyond their meaning - a factor in our economy." This ticket stub demonstrates high value in that it comes from the game that began a national phenomenon, Super Bowl I.
