1968 Bill Russell Original Photograph Used for 1968 Topps Test Card (PSA Type I)
Basketball Hall of Fame center Bill Russell played 13 seasons for the Boston Celtics and won 11 NBA championships. He actually wound up serving as a player/coach during his final two seasons in Beantown (1967-68 and 1968-69) and again guided the team to a pair of titles. Featured here is an 8” wide by 10” high black-and-white photo that Topps shot in 1968 for a test set of cards. The 6’10” Russell, who was known as a rebounding machine as he averaged 22.5 boards per game for his entire career, is shown dribbling a basketball in his Celtics No. 6 uniform. The print has been authenticated by PSA as an original Type I photograph, which means it’s a 1st generation photo, developed from the original negative, during the period (within approximately two years) of when the picture was taken. It’s now encapsulated in an oversized holder ready for showing. One of only three known.
