1968 Topps Baseball Action Stickers Box Top with Mickey Mantle - Extremely Rare!
In 1968, Topps issued the "Action All-Star Stickers" test set, creating one of the scarcest, and most unusual, of all Topps Test issues. There were sixteen numbered vertical sticker panels in the set, each comprised of three 3.25x5.25" panels, perforated at the joints for potential separation. Each three-panel strip features a large image of a star player in the center panel, with smaller pictures of three players on the top and bottom panels. While the actual stickers are scarce, they are seen and we do have a pair of Mickey Mantle full panels available in this Leland's Masters auction. However, what is highly desirable, but VERY RARE, is the box top featuring, once again, Mickey Mantle. This 5.5x5.75" box top is neatly "popped" from the perforations, but contains a small missing piece along the right side. In addition, there is a horizontal crease about an inch from the top, traversing the Mantle image, but does not detract from the tremendous desirability of the piece. This piece is so rare, we found only one display box offered for sale (seven years ago), and even the famed Bill Wilen Mickey Mantle collection which recently sold had a very large contingent of scarce Mantle card box "cut outs" but did not include the 1968 Action All-Stars box top. This extremely rare Mickey Mantle box top derives from the large Mickey Mantle collection consigned to Leland's at the 2017 National Convention in Chicago, and when word spread of the box top, many full time dealers stopped by our booth to see this piece.
