1969-1971 Ernie Banks Chicago Cubs Signed Game Used Bat w/"Yosh" Marks (PSA GU 7)

1969-1971 Ernie Banks Chicago Cubs Signed Game Used Bat w/"Yosh" Marks (PSA GU 7)

Ernie Banks H&B pro-model ("S2") bat dating from the 1969-1971 manufacturing period. Graded GU 7 by PSA. The bat, which measures 36 inches and weighs 35.2 ounces, is not cracked and displays light use, including rack marks. Both Banks' uniform number ("14") and the bat's length ("36") are written on the knob in vintage black marker. One of the most important features on the bat, as noted in PSA's accompanying LOA, is the presence of "Yosh" marks (S2 36" 35) next to the "Powerized" stamping on the barrel. Those notations, which reference, respectively, the bat's model number, length, and weight, were made by the Cubs' longtime clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano and provide collectors with a high-degree of assurance that the bat was used in a game. This bat was presented by Banks to a close friend in 1972 as evidenced by the lengthy black-marker inscription written by Banks on the barrel: "To Ed Shane/Best always to a great man/Ernie Banks/Chi-Cubs/1972." Both the signature and inscription grade 7/10 on average, but as PSA notes in a separate autograph LOA, a few portions of the inscription (not the signature) have been slightly enhanced in an unknown hand. Both the inscription and signature have been covered with pieces of vintage clear tape. The period 1969-1971 marked the final three seasons of Banks' illustrious career. Although he played only part time in 1970 and 1971, the 1970 season was highlighted by Banks joining the elite 500 Home Run Club. He finished his career with 512 home runs and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977, his first year of eligibility. Individual full LOAs from PSA for both the bat (GU 7) and signature.
