1969 Al Oliver Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Rookie Jersey

1969 Al Oliver Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Rookie Jersey

Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey worn by Al Oliver during his 1969 rookie season. The white flannel vest-style jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number 29 on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold felt. The name "Oliver," along with the jersey size ("42") and year ("69"), are chain-stitched in black on the left front tail. Also located on the left front tail are a "Rawlings size 42" label, a laundry tag, and an adjacent flag tag reading "Set 1 1969." The jersey is all original and displays moderate-to-heavy wear. Oliver made his Major League debut with the Pirates in 1968, appearing in four games in late September, before joining the club as the team's starting first baseman in 1969. Oliver wore number 29 in 1968 and at the start of 1969, before changing in mid-season to number 16, which he wore for the remainder of his career in Pittsburgh. Therefore, this jersey was obviously worn by Oliver at the very start of his rookie campaign. Oliver enjoyed a very successful first season, batting .285 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. Those numbers were good enough to earn him second place in the Rookie of the Year balloting behind Willie McCovey. A 7-time All-Star selection and former National League batting champion, Oliver was one of top hitters of his era. In 18 seasons, he batted over .300 on 11 occasions and finished his career with 2,743 hits and a .303 lifetime average.
