1969 Gene Alley Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Jersey
Presented is a game worn Gene Alley Pittsburgh Pirates sleeveless road jersey. Alley was an outstanding defensive shortstop who played his entire 11-year Major League career (1963-73) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a 2-time All-Star, a 2-time Gold Glove winner, and a key member of the 1971 Pittsburgh World Champions. Alley was only a modest hitter who batted .254 lifetime, but he more than earned his keep with stellar defense. During his career, Alley was usually the double-play partner of Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski, and the duo is one of only eight double-play combinations to each win Gold Gloves at their respective positions for two years (1967-68). In addition, Alley and Mazeroski still hold the record for most double-plays in a season, 161, in 1966. The gray road jersey has all original "PIRATES" and "14" on the front. On the back it has the original "4" for his number "14," but the "1" is missing; it could have been removed by the team or by a previous owner. One can clearly see the stitching outline for the "1." The jersey exhibits fine use. The jersey has six silver buttons down the front and lettering and numbering in black with gold trim. Sewn on the front outside tail is "Alley 40 69," and also on the front outside tail is Spalding size 40 tagging. Below the above-mentioned tags is a tag giving washing instructions and an adjacent "Set 1 1969" tag. Alley neatly signed the jersey in the collar by using a fine tipped black marker. The Pirates were one of the teams to first utilize sleeveless jerseys, and this game worn, and signed Gene Alley jersey makes a fine vintage memento of one of the finest Pittsburgh Pirate eras.
