1969 J.C. Martin New York Mets World Series Charm
J.C. Martin was a back-up catcher on the 1969 New York Mets, but he helped the New Yorkers win the World Series that year against the Baltimore Orioles. Presented is a New York Met 1969 World Series charm. The front of the charm shows the Met logo, with an orange "Mets" fronting a blue New York City skyline. On the back of the charm is engraved "World Series / 1969/ JC. Martin." With the Mets leading the Series 2-1, The fourth game was 3-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning. Mets manager Gil Hodges sent Martin up to hit for Tom Seaver with Mets on first and second and no outs. Martin bunted the ball and ran to first apparently attempting to shield Oriole second baseman Davey Johnson, who was covering first. The throw from pitcher Pete Richert hit Martin on the wrist and Rod Gasper, the runner on second, came around to score the winning run. Later on, video evidence showed that Martin was in fair territory when he ran to first and should have been called out. The Mets won the Series 4-1, and thus became the "Miracle Mets." Since Martin was credited with a sacrifice, he helped the Mets win their first World Series without ever having an official at bat in the Series. The charm is approximately a half inch in diameter. There is a small chip to the enamel at the top of the front, but otherwise the colorful charm is in good condition. The charm once belonged to Martin, and it will bring a bit of the 1969 World Series with it.
