1969 Topps Supers Complete Set (66)
Offered is a complete set of 1969 Topps Supers, a set of 66 cards distributed on a very limited basis in the New York City and surrounding areas. It has been surmised they were issued in their own five-count cello packs, with some long time collectors remembering obtaining some of these rare cards in cello packs of 1969 Topps regular issue cards. Whether they were issued within their own packs, or inserts within 1969 Topps cello packs (we believe both ways!), these cards are scarcely seen on their own and almost never offered as complete sets. This set derives from the same consignor as with the Mickey Mantle Collection obtained by Leland's at the 2017 National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, and was purchased decades ago directly from Richard Gelman at Card Collector's Company of New York. It has remained in his possession ever since. However, many of the cards were stored in old-style photo albums with those black corner tabs, and a portion of these cards have light indentations in the upper left and lower right corners. Some cards even have a light amount of black marking in these two corners, likely transferred from those corner tabs. In addition, there is light-to-moderate paper loss on some (but not all) of the fronts, also likely coming from the original storage photo albums. Interestingly, three of the best overall cards are three keys: Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson and Hank Aaron, which all have been PSA graded. Based upon these grades received, the complete set would grade EX to EX/MT overall, with likely a few lesser. Includes: complete set of 66 cards w/#1 McNally, 2 F. Robinson, 3 B. Robinson, 5 Yaz, 19 Killebrew, 24 Mantle (PSA EX 5), 28 Jackson RC (PSA EX-MT 6), 34 Aaron (PSA EX-MT 6), 41 Rose, 42 Morgan, 46 Drysdale, 52 Seaver, 58 Clemente, 60 Gibson, 65 Mays and 66 McCovey. Despite the technical difficulties from prior storage efforts, these cards are extremely scarce and seldom sold in complete set form. A tremendous opportunity for the serious collector.
