1970 George Foreman vs. "Irish" Boone Kirkman Large On-Site Boxing Poster

Original one-sheet style fight poster heralding a bout between George Foreman and "Irish" Boone Kirkman, the "2 Best Young Heavyweights In The World," at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 15, 1970. This is a rare Foreman fight poster and the first example we have ever offered. It is also the only example we have seen bearing the October 15th date. The fight was originally scheduled for October 15th, but had to be postponed after the attending physician at the pre-fight physical determined that Kirkman was suffering from an acute upper respiratory infection. The bout eventually took place at Madison Square Garden one month later, on November 18th. (Additional posters were produced bearing the November 18th date that were different in design.) Foreman was undefeated entering the bout, having won nineteen of his twenty-two fights by knockout. Kirkman's record was nearly as impressive: 22-1 with eighteen knockouts. Despite their similar records, Kirkman proved no match against the heavily favored former Olympic champion. Foreman knocked Kirkman down once in the first round and twice in the second round before the referee stopped the fight, giving Foreman the TKO victory. The poster (28x41"), which is linen backed, displays a few tiny tears along the folds lines that have been ameliorated by the mounting process and it is Near Mint in it its overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 37x49." Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot willnecessitate an increased shipping charge.
