1970 Medical Society of NY Coach of the Year Presented to Weeb Ewbank

Maybe things should have been the other way around. Instead of the Medical Society of New York giving an award to Ewbank as the 1970 New York Coach of the Year in recognition for "his health-conscious coaching efforts," maybe New York Jets' head coach Weeb Ewbank should have been giving the Medical Society of New York an award for keeping his star quarterback, Joe Namath, and his infamous bad knees, healthy enough to win Super Bowl III in 1969, in which Namath and the Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts, formerly coached by Ewbank. The Jets Super Bowl triumph was an amazing upset and the first time that an American Football League team won the Super Bowl. Ewbank had previously coached the Baltimore Colts to NFL Championships in 1958 and 1959, and Ewbank developed great stars on the Colts such as Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, and Alan Ameche. The award comes with a signed Letter of Provenance from Charley Winner, a former assistant coach under Ewbank on the 1958 Baltimore Colts, and later the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1966-1971. The 10.75x12.75" wooden plaque salutes Ewbank for "Winning the hearts of New York sports fans." The award was presented to Ewbank at the Third Annual Symposium on the Medical Aspects of Sports on Feb. 7, 1970, at the Americana Hotel, New York City. The plaque includes an image of Ewbank, an outstanding Hall of Fame coach who developed two of the greatest quarterbacks in history - Johnny Unitas and Joe Namath and won championships with each.
