1970 Rico Carty NL Batting Champion Silver Bat

1970 Rico Carty NL Batting Champion Silver Bat

Rico Carty was known as "Beeg Boy," and he was a 6'3", 195 lb. slugger with muscular forearms and a devastating swing. One of the first Dominicans in the Major Leagues, he was originally a catcher, but was switched to left field to minimize his defensive liabilities. In the Major Leagues, he was mainly a left fielder, but he also caught, and played first and third. In reality, his real position was essentially that of a hitter. What a hitter! Despite playing in 1967 with a separated shoulder and hitting only .255, and missing both the 1968 season with tuberculosis, and the 1971 season with a badly injured knee, he had a .299 lifetime average, with 204 home runs and 890 RBIs, and played until he was 40 years old. Overall, Carty played 15 Major League seasons, and in addition to playing for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, he also was with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Texas Rangers. 1970 remains Carty's best season, and as an Atlanta Brave that season, he was so good that despite not being on the All-Star ballot, he was voted to the National league team as a write-in candidate. The beautiful National League Batting Champion bat is 34" long and it weighs 54 3/8 ounces. It is made with real silver. Engraved on the label is "Louisville Slugger 125 Hillerich & Bradsby Made in U.S.A. Louisville, Ky. Trade Mark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off./ Powerized and oil tempered." On the barrel is engraved "Batting Champion 1970 National League B.A. .366." Higher on the barrel is engraved "Genuine Louisville Slugger" and engraved on the barrel as a facsimile signature is "Rico Carty." There is some slight tarnishing, but overall, the bat is in excellent condition, and it makes a unique and prized addition to any collection.
