1970 Topps Baseball Box Original Art from 1989 Topps Auction
Spectacular gouache on heavy artist's board (15x12") is from one of the great treasure troves in history, the unforgettable 1989 Topps Auction. Fresh from the pond, this has not been seen since it went on the block in NYC. This one-of-a-kind rarity is the original painting for the lid of the Topps baseball display box for 1970, but its leanings go back to the Miracle of 1969. It features a New York Mets player (who else?) with proud orange "NY" emblazoned on his helmet. A natural homage as baseball went crazy for the Mets and so did Topps as their "World Champions" team card was #1 in the set. Batter is beautifully contrasted by a green & blue background, a method symbol for earth and sky. Interestingly, Mr. Met has a "23" easily recognizable in the cup of his bat end. This had to be an inside joke from the Topps artist as it is a complete un-necessity, yet there it is. Please solve the mystery and more importantly BUY IT! Why, because this is an amazing piece of Topps history and at the same time a true work of art for your baseball museum. Best of all the Topps artist wrote his "hours" on the back. Took him 15 hours!
