1970s Franco Harris Worn Helmet
This brutally beautiful Steeler helmet worn by Franco Harris early in his HOF career is a rare treat for Francophiles. Hardcore Steeler buffs (is there any other kind?) will be able to idenfity all the earmarks of thhis vintage headgear. Such distinguishing characteristics are subtle, given that the team has worn basically the same helmet since 1962 when the 3-hypocycloid (sort of a triangle) Steelmark logo -- yellow for coal, orange for ore, blue for steel scrap -- was first used as part of a promotional campaign by the steel industry. One giveaway is that it's a suspension helmet, which endured from the '50s until the mid-70s. (Franco began in 1972.) Another is its gray facemask, which was changed to black in '76. (Some trivia: the Steelers are the only team to put their logo on only one side of their helmets.) Speaking of earmarks, there are those and all other head-area marks on the Riddell helmet, left by Franco's forays through and around the line of scrimmage, and the logo sticker is torn in 2 spots and gashed in others through the colors are still vivid. The gold adhesive strip running from front to back, where it splits Franco's taped-on number "32", begins about an inch from the front, leaving an earea where the Riddell nameplate used to be. Chin strap with "Riddell" in red is intact. Facemask also in good shape with a few light gashes. Interior padding is firm, with one padded strip having a "4" and another the size "7 1/2" stamped on. There are no numbers on the front of the helmet indicating that it was used by Franco during the Steeler's training camp. Helmet comes from former NBA player Moose Miller who obtained it during the 1970s. Great original helmet from the pit bull of those 4 Super Bowl-winning teams.
