1970s Gerela's Gorilla Costume Worn by Bob Bubanic - Founder of "Gerela's Gorillas" (Bubanic LOA & Photo Documentation)
Roy Gerela was a Steeler fan-favorite since his first year Pittsburgh in 1971. He was so well-liked that in his first year with the team, a Port Vue fan club started the "Gerela's Gorillas," based around the Steelers' acquisition of the soccer-style kicker in 1971. Bob Bubanic was the founder of the fan base and was the one who donned this gorilla suit to Steeler games in the 1970s. It is a heavy body suit with exact photo and newspaper documentation of Bob wearing the suit! Also comes with signed LOA by Bob Bubanic and his brother Bernard. Tons of newspaper articles showing Bubanic in the suit accompany this lot as well as letters from the Press thanking Bob for stories and showing up to events. Does not come with Gorilla mask. The club had to pay $50 a week to use the suit, but in the heart of the winter months in the tundra of Pittsburgh, it was well worth it.
