1971 Frank Robinson 500th Career Homerun Bat
Behold the very bat that Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson used on September 13, 1971 to hit his 500th home run, joining an elite class of sluggers ever to achieve that feat. He crushed the homer at Baltimore's Municipal Stadium off of Fred Scherman of the Detroit Tigers in the ninth inning of a 10-5 loss, one of the very few by that great O's team that season. The bat is a Hillerich & Bradsby model R161M, weighs 35 ounces and measures 35 inches. The lumber shows moderate use with some ball marks on the barrel and is uncracked. Number "20" is written on the knob in marker, as is "35" for the weight. The bat was signed immediately following the game in 6/10 black marker. It was signed again at some later date with "Homerun #500, 9/13/71, Frank Robinson." This precious artifact comes with two LOA's; one from the Detroit Tigers photographer who obtained the bat from Robinson in the clubhouse after the game. Also included is a photo of Robinson's historic swing and the stadium scoreboard tribute. It was taken by the photographer who was given the bat. One of the most feared hitters ever to step in a batter's box, Robinson remains the only player ever to win MVP honors in both the National and American Leagues. He also won the coveted Triple Crown in the Orioles' championship season of 1966, his first year with the club after having spent his first 10 seasons in Cincinnati. To date, only 25 men have ever slugged 500 home runs, and at the time of his retirement in 1976, Robinson's 586 long balls were the fourth-most in major league history. Robinson also became the first black manager in major league history, during his final two seasons as a player and 14 more seasons after that.
