1971 Joe Niekro Game Worn Tigers Jersey
Joe Niekro was still refining his knuckleball and more devious means of getting out hitters when he wore this Detroit Tigers home jersey in 1971, notching six of his eventual 221 victories. The design is classic, anchored by the gothic-script D stitched into the chest and blue piping around the collar and buttom holes. Niekro and a medium-sized 19 (already his third uniform number) are embroidered on the back. Some frayed stitching and collar grime point to a tour or two around the American League. Wilson size 42 is a wool holdout as baseball began shifting toward doubleknit synthetics without buttons. The Tigers were 91-71 that year and finished second in their division. Niekro, who was once caught with a nail file on the mound, didn't earn a World Series ring until he played for Minnesota in 1987. But he sure looked like a winner in Detroit. 100% original.
