1971 Muhammad Ali Gets Knocked Down by Joe Frazier PSA/DNA Type I Photo
The WBA, WBC, and The Ring heavyweight championship fight on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York City was called simply "The Fight" - and for good reason. For the first time in boxing history, two long time undefeated fighters, each holding the World Heavyweight Boxing Title or having held the title, were to meet in a Heavyweight Championship fight. Presented is a 11x14" Type I original 1971 photograph taken by Frank Hurley of the New York Daily News of Ali after he has just been knocked to the canvas by Frazier. In 1971, Ali was the favorite of the anti-establishment/anti-Vietnam War crowd, as Ali had been stripped of his titles for his refusal to submit to the military draft. Frazier was supported by the pro-establishment, pro Vietnam War crowd. In the fight, Frazier won by a unanimous decision. Frazier knocked Ali to the canvas in the 15th and final round. On the back of the photo are the captions from two uses of the photo in two different editions of the Daily News. One caption states, "Oh, how the mighty have fallen. A groggy Muhammad Ali starts to roll to his feet after being dropped by Joe Frazier's left hook in 15th. Ali, who claims he 'don't remember going down,' but did remember getting up, held on to finish round." The other caption reads, bewildered...dazed...hurt... beaten. Muhammad struggles to get back on his feet in punishing 15th." The back of the photo also has "Joe Frazier vs Ali" written in an unknown hand in pen and "Knockdown" written by an unknown hand in black marker. Later in his career, Ali would win his other two fights with Frazier, but on the night this photograph was taken, Frazier reigned triumphant. The photo has some creasing, a few tiny pen marks, and some tearing along the right border. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
