1971 Roberto Clemente Signed World Series Game Used Bat (GU 9.5)
Our consignor received this beauty from a close family friend who attended the 1971 World Series in Baltimore between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles. Clemente helped lead the Pirates to the '71 World Series championship as the Pirates took four out of seven games against Baltimore. The bat was obtained from Clemente in Baltimore at Memorial Stadium. This game-used bat was autographed by Baseball Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente and also Ernie Banks from the Chicago Cubs. Banks attended the World Series on special assignment for the Chicago Tribune and was in attendance when the Clemente bat was obtained. Clemente batted .414 in the '71 World Series as he collected 12 hits in 29 at-bats (2 home runs) as the Pirates dethroned the Orioles, the defending champions. This was Clemente's last World Series appearance, as he tragically died 14 months after the World Series celebration in a plan crash off the coast of Puerto Rico. Clemente was en route to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims on a humanitarian mission. The bat is signed by Clemente between the label and name, and is signed by Banks under Clemente's name, and both signatures grade a 7. Names are signed in green pen. Model "U1" on knob and has a handle crack. Comes with JSA LOA and letter from consignor. Graded GU9.5
