1971 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Get Well Card w/Roberto Clemente (Beckett)
Offered is a charming, unusual item: a colorful Get-Well Card signed by the 1971 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Produced by Alexander Cards, the card was previously folded in the middle to make two approx. 4.2x6.1" sides, but the card has been opened up to make a single presentation measuring approx. 8.4x6.1". The printed message on the card reads, "HELLO/HOPE YOU'RE FEELING BETTER." The image shows three smiling fish swimming towards what could be a tropical island. After the above message, hand-printed in an unknown hand in blue ink is "FROM THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES." There are 26 signatures: Hall of Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente amassed exactly 3,000 hits before dying the following year on December 31st in a plane crash while on a mission to help earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Another Hall of Famer signing the card was great fielding second baseman Bill Mazeroski. Also signing: Al Oliver, coach Bill Virdon, coach Frank Oceak, Dock Ellis, Bob Moose, Bob Veale, Gene Clines, Gene Alley, Milt May, Bob Robertson, Richie Hebner, Dave Giusti, Nelson Briles, Bruce Kison, and more. Each of the signatures is in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The back of the card is blank, except for the manufacturer's name and the remnant of a small piece of tape. The card has a few pinholes that are mostly visible from the back. The 1971 Pirates had a 97-65 regular season record, to win the National League East, defeated the San Francisco Giants to win the National League pennant, and beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in the World Series. The folded card has been encapsulated and BGS certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTOGRAPH."
