1972 Jim Palmer Photo-Matched Baltimore Orioles Signed Game Worn Jersey (MEARS A10 & Photo-Matched)

1972 Jim Palmer Photo-Matched Baltimore Orioles Signed Game Worn Jersey (MEARS A10 & Photo-Matched)

Presented is a photo-matched 1972 game worn and signed all original Jim Palmer Baltimore Orioles knit, gray road jersey. Photo-match is to an undated photograph of Palmer in the dugout. The Hall of Fame right-hander pitched 19 Major League seasons, all with Baltimore (1965-67 & 1969-84). Palmer had a 268-152 lifetime record with a career ERA of 2.86. Palmer was an 8-time 20-game winner and a part of six Orioles' pennant winners, and he was a key member of three World Series Champions. During the 1970s, Palmer had the most wins of any Major League pitcher, with 186 victories. He is the only pitcher in Major League history to have won a World Series game in three decades (1960s, '70s, and '80s). The 4-time Gold Glove winner often had a contentious relationship with Hall of Fame Baltimore manager Earl Weaver. The Oriole skipper used to accuse Palmer of having psychosomatic injures. One time when Palmer was on the injury shelf, a reporter asked him how long he would need to recover. Tongue in cheek, Palmer replied, "Two weeks, maybe three. You never know with psychosomatic injuries. You have to take your time with them." In 1972, when Palmer wore the offered jersey, he had a record of 21-10, with a 2.07 ERA, as the Orioles finished in third place in the AL East Division with a record of 80-74. The 6-time All-Star won two AL ERA titles. After his playing career, Palmer became a broadcaster. Asked why he did not go into managing, Palmer indirectly continued to refer to his verbal sparring with his former Baltimore manager, Earl Weaver, as Jim replied, "Most pitchers are too smart to manage." The jersey has "Baltimore," in double tackle twill, written in underlined script across the chest, with orange sewn-on lettering with black trim. Underneath the team's name is "22," in double tackle twill, in sewn-on orange numerals with black trim. The button-down jersey has six charcoal buttons. On the rear inside tail are two tags. The felt strip tag reads, "22-42-72," listing number/size/and year. The other tail tag is a manufacturer's tag reading "SPALDING Professional." On the back is 'PALMER," in sewn-on orange lettering with black trim. Under "PALMER" is "22," in orange sewn-on numerals with black trim. The jersey is in excellent condition and yet shows heavy use. Palmer signed the jersey on the lower right front in black ink from a marker. The jersey comes with a detailed MEARS Letter of Opinion that awards the jersey a final grade of A10.
