1972 Last Base Ever Touched by Roberto Clemente

1972 Last Base Ever Touched by Roberto Clemente

This was the last stop on the marvelous journey that was Roberto Clemente's Hall of Fame career. Less than two months later he would be lost forever, a great tragedy to both the baseball world and the world at large. Great LOA is transcribed here: "On October 11, 1972, I attended the last game of the 1972 National League Championship Series in Cincinnati. After the game was over, and because of the excitement, many of the fans, including myself, ran onto the field. Most of the people went for 1st and 3rd base or to home--I was alone at 2nd base and took the base out of the ground and left the stadium through the right field section. The base is marked with an inventory identifier "Cincinnati Reds Inc. 270." I also inscribed the base on top after I took it home. I have had the base ever since. It is the last base Roberto Clemente ever touched--late in the game he walked and then ran to second base as Joe Morgan (Reds 2nd baseman) threw out the next batter at 1st base on a ground ball." Base has the perfect look of use, and bears forever the invisible footprint of one of the finest men and finest players the game has ever known.
