1973-75 Thurman Munson New York Yankees Game Issued Bat

1973-75 Thurman Munson New York Yankees Game Issued Bat

Offered is a pristine Hillerich & Bradsby Model S44 Louisville Slugger bat, endorsed by Thurman Munson. Munson could really swing the bat - compiling a lifetime MLB batting average of .292, with 113 homers and 701 RBI. He helped the New York Yankees to three pennants and two World Series titles, was a Rookie of the Year (1970) and American League Most Valuable player (1976), won three Gold Gloves, and was a 7-time All-Star. Famous baseball historian and statistician Bill James said of Munson's ability, "Four of the top catchers of all-time were born in 1947 - Bench, Fisk, Boone, and Munson."

This S44 bat is 31" long and weighs 33 ounces. It shows no use. The top barrel imprint reads "Genuine Thurman Munson (his name in script) Louisville Slugger." The label contains the standard Louisville Slugger trademark, with the number 125 - signifying that the highest-grade wood was used, a grade reserved for all pro level models. Munson passed away on August 2, 1979, in a tragic crash of a plane he was piloting. Although noted for an often-grouchy demeanor, esteemed sportswriter, author and broadcaster Phil Pepe saw past Munson's crustiness when Pepe said, "He was the most misunderstood athlete I have ever encountered... because he wore his irascibility as a badge of honor to camouflage the real Thurman Munson. Down deep he was a pussycat, a man of deep compassion and understanding...." The Yankees have honored Munson with a monument. The bat is a valuable memento of his clutch hitting, toughness, and humanity.
