1973 Bobby Murcer New York Yankees Game Used Helmet
New York Yankees batting helmet worn by star outfielder Bobby Murcer in 1973. The navy blue helmet (size "L") features the club's "NY" logo on the front in white. Located on the interior are three different ABC (American Baseball Cap) manufacturers labels and a "KM Pro" label. Murcer's uniform number, "1," is written on the top foam pad in faded black marker. The helmet displays outstanding use, including light pine tar on the top of the brim, numerous exterior scratches and blemishes, and wear along the interior leather headband. The dating of this helmet is predicated solely upon a handwritten notation in blue ink that appears on one of the ABC labels that reads "Bobby Murcer/July 10, 1973/Tues." Given that notation, it appears that Murcer presented the helmet to someone as a gift, with the date memorialized on the interior by the recipient. Research indicates that the Yankees were in Chicago on Tuesday, July 10, 1973, to play the White Sox in what was the second game of a three-game series. Murcer had a single in four at bats in the Yankees 2-1 loss that night. Murcer, who was the club's top player during the early 1970s, led the team in batting average (.304), home runs (22) and RBI (95) in 1973. A five-time All-Star, he finished his seventeen-year career in 1983 with 252 home runs, 1,043 RBI, and a .277 lifetime average.
