1974 Joe Frazier Fight Worn Robe vs. Jerry Quarry

1974 Joe Frazier Fight Worn Robe vs. Jerry Quarry

Five years after their first encounter, Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry had a rematch to put one in position to get another shot at the title held by Muhammad Ali. Quarry had gone on a terrific winning streak that included six straight victories and upset wins over both Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers. Quarry was always dangerous and seemed to be a better fighter under new trainer Gil Clancy. Quarry's record was 49-7-4 and 31 of his wins had come via the knockout. Joe Frazier was still smarting from his close decision loss to Ali only six months earlier and wanted to get his shot at the title. In the first fight with Quarry, Frazier wore Jerry down and ended the fight when Quarry was too cut to continue. This second fight on June 17, 1974, was more of the same. Frazier bore right into Quarry, took what Quarry could dish out and landed terrific power shots. Quarry was cut in the second round, knocked down in the 4th and in the 5th referee Joe Louis moved in and stopped the fight awarding a technical knockout to Frazier. Offered here is the actual fight worn robe used by Joe Frazier in this fight. The robe is a full length, orange cloth robe with white trim, white satin interior and includes the white sash. In the collar is a manufacturer's label for Everlast with the logo, MADE EXPRESSLY FOR JOE FRAZIER. On the back in orange lettering with white trim are sewn the words, SMOKIN JOE. The front sports two waist pockets and a pocket at the left breast with a manufacturer's label for Everlast with the logo, MADE EXPRESSLY FOR JOE FRAZIER. Signed on the sleeve in faded black sharpie, SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER. The robe is perfectly intact, showing some wear and some age fading, common to a robe over forty years old. Video matched to this fight. Comes with a full letter from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. who researched the robe for this sale.
