1975 Bill Virdon New York Yankees Signed Game Worn Jersey
New York Yankees road jersey worn by manager Bill Virdon in 1975. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" on the front and features the number "21" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in navy on white tackle twill. "Virdon" is chain-stitched in navy upon a gray strip tag in the collar. A "Rawlings 42" label appears on the left front tail. Virdon has signed the jersey in black marker (grading 8/10) on the left breast. The small flag tag adjacent to the Rawlings label, which listed the year and set number, has been removed, otherwise the jersey is original as issued. Despite the lack of the year/set tag, this jersey can be conclusively dated to the 1975 season because Virdon managed the Yankees only in 1974 and 1975, but the team wore Wilson jerseys in 1974. The jersey displays moderate wear, including light soiling and a small tear on the front. There are several marker notations in the collar that have been crossed out in black marker. Given the wear and marker cross outs, it is probable that this jersey was used by a player the following year during spring training (it was common practice for clubs to wear their previous season's uniforms during spring training).Virdon, who enjoyed a successful twelve-year Major League career (1955-1968) as an outfielder, guided the Yankees to a surprising third place finish in 1974 in his first season as manager. Unfortunately for Virdon, he worked for owner George Steinbrenner. In 1975 the Yankees were playing .500 ball through the first two thirds of the season when Steinbrenner became impatient and replaced Virdon with former Yankees star Billy Martin. Virdon later enjoyed a long managerial tenure with the Houston Astros and then two seasons with the Montreal Expos before retiring in 1984.
