1976 Jack Lambert Sport Magazine MVP Award by Tiffany & Co. (Lambert Letter)
Middle linebacker Jack Lambert was, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, "The greatest linebacker of his era." Presented is the 1976 Jack Lambert Sport Magazine MVP Award. Lambert had an 11-year NFL career, all with the Steelers. He was a key part of four Steeler Super Bowl victories. Although listed as 220 pounds when Lambert broke in with the Steelers in 1974, Lambert was really only 204 pounds then, very light for a middle linebacker. Yet the Steelers knew what they were doing, because they often used Lambert to drop back and cover the gap in front of the two Pittsburgh safeties in a Tampa Two twin safety coverage, and Lambert's lighter weight made him more mobile than if he were heavier. Lambert was the 1974 NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year, and the 1976 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. The Sport Magazine Award is designed to be in two parts - a wooden base and a crystal "football field". The wooden base measures 3x4.5", with a height of approx. 1". There are two sterling sliver plaques, one on each side (front and back) of the base, each measuring 0.75x3.5". One of the plaques is engraved "JACK LAMBERT/Pittsburgh Steelers vs Cincinnati Bengals October 16, 1976." The other plaque reads, "SPORT MVP." A 2x3.5x2" crystal "football field" fits on top of the wooden stand. A football field is depicted on the top of the crystal, with a depiction of a lined field, with yard markers, end zones, and goal posts. Two images of footballs are etched on the crystal. This crystal is marked by Tiffany & Co. The side of the wooden base is signed and inscribed by Lambert in gold marker as "Jack Lambert HOF '90." The item came right from Lambert's personal collection and comes with a signed letter from him. The beautiful award is in EX-MT condition.
