1977 Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles Signed Game Worn Jersey (MEARS A10)

Presented is a game worn and signed 1977 Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles jersey. Robinson, a Hall of Famer who played his entire 23-year Major League career with the Baltimore Orioles, was known as "Mr. Hoover" or "The Human Vacuum Cleaner" for his uncanny ability to clean up just about any baseball that came near third base. He was an incredible fielder at the hot corner, and it was no secret; he won a total of 16 Gold Gloves for third base, and all of his Gold Gloves - every season from 1960-1975 - were in consecutive seasons. Robinson has the most Gold Gloves for any position player in Major League history. In the 1970 season, Robinson's great play was witnessed by millions of fans in the World Series that year won by his Baltimore Orioles against the Cincinnati Reds. Brooks put on a fielding show for the ages. He handled 24 chances, with myriad noteworthy plays. For example, he made two spectacular plays against the Reds in Game 3 and a great diving stop of a line drive against Johnny Bench in Game 5, the World Series final when the Orioles won the World Championship. He also hit .429 for the Series, with two home runs. His overall play was so great that he was named the 1970 World Series MVP. He was awarded a Dodge Charger automobile for his MVP achievement. Pete Rose, a member of the Losing Cincinnati team, stated, "If we knew he wanted the car that badly, we'd have bought one for him ourselves." Robinson was an 18-time All-Star, a 2-time World Series winner, and the American League MVP in 1964 when he exhibited his usual Gold Glove magic and hit .317, with 28 home runs, and an AL leading 118 RBIs. Brooks hit .267 for his career, with 268 homers. Robinson was a 3-time AL putout leader for third basemen, and he is first all-time in putouts for AL third sackers. Brooks also led the AL hot corner players in assists in 11 seasons and is ranked first all-time in AL third base assists. The acrobatic Robinson was an 11-time AL leader in double plays by a third sacker. The jersey is from Robinson's final season, when Robinson was 40 years old. He played sparingly, only hitting .149 in 47 official at bats, but fielded perfectly in 15 appearances at third base. The knit gray road jersey shows an impressive appearance. It has a Wilson size 42 tag in the collar and "77 2" strip tag on the front tail. "Orioles" is sewn on the chest, in script, in orange letters with black trim. Below the team's name is "5" in a sewn-on orange numeral with black trim. There are seven buttonholes down the front, with six charcoal buttons (one missing - the jersey's only flaw). The back shows "ROBINSON" in orange letters with black trim sewn on a gray nameplate. Below the nameplate is "5" in an orange numeral with black trim sewn-on. Robinson has signed and inscribed the jersey (on the lower left front), in neat big and bold writing, as "Brooks Robinson HOF 83" written in black ink from a marker. The jersey comes with a fully detailed Letter of Opinion from MEARS that gives the jersey a final grade of "A10." Many baseball aficionados consider Brooks Robinson as the best fielding third baseman in history, and his signed and inscribed game worn jersey, in such an excellent condition, makes an important addition to any sports collection.
