1977 Muhammed Ali 11x14" PSA/DNA Type I Photograph
Ali was 35 years old and long past his prime when he fought Ernie Shavers at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sept. 29, 1977. Presented is a stunning 11x14" Type I original photograph issued from Time Inc. of Ali fighting Shavers in 1977, when the great Ali earned a hard-earned victory. Shavers badly hurt Ali in the second round, but the wily Ali pretended to be more injured than he actually was, making Shavers believe that Ali was faking his injury, so Shavers never moved in for the kill. The fight went the full 15 rounds. Sports Illustrated writer Pat Putnam described the brilliance of Ali that night: "But to me the fifteenth round against Shavers was as magnificent as any round Ali ever fought.... He was exhausted.... But he came out and fought three minutes as good as any three minutes I've ever seen." After boxing Shavers, Ali had only four more professional fights: He fought Leon Spinks twice in 1978, losing the first and winning the second. Then he lost to Larry Holmes in 1980 and Trevor Berbick in 1981, and his career was over. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA. The offered photo captures Ali as he reaches back for the strength of his youth in the next-to-last fight that he ever won.
