1978 Cincinnati Reds Tour of Japan Warmup Suit
Presented is a Cincinnati Reds warm-up suit that was made for the Reds' Goodwill Tour of Japan after the conclusion of the 1978 MLB season. The tour was sponsored by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, also the owner of the Yomiuri Giants Japanese baseball team. The Reds went 14-2-1 in their 17 games on the tour against various competition in Japan. Known as "The Big Red machine," the 1970s Reds had won the National League pennant in 1970 and 1972, and the World Series in both 1975 and 1976. In the 1978 regular season, Cincinnati was 92-69, for second place in the NL West. Hall of Famer Tony Perez was no longer on the team, replaced at first base by Dan Driessen. Pete Rose, at third base, hit .302, and shortstop Dave Concepcion batted .301. Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench hit 23 homers and drove in 73 runs and left fielder George Foster hit 40 home runs and had 120 RBIs. Hall of Famer Tom Seaver was 16-14, with a 2.88 ERA. The team was managed by Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson. the warm-up suit is manufactured by Rawlings. Sewn onto the left breast of the cream-colored outfit is a bright red Reds' logo. The collar features red and white striping. A Rawlings patch is sewn near the right pocket. The jacket (top) part of the two piece warm-up has no size listed, but the top would be an estimated L-XL. The pants have a Rawlings patch and pockets. Size "35-38" tags are in the waist. The warm-up is in excellent condition and shows little or no wear. The offered jacket and pants come with a COA. The outfit makes a fine remembrance of the final years of the Big Red Machine.
