1978 Willie Mays New York Mets Signed Game Worn Coaches Jersey

1978 Willie Mays New York Mets Signed Game Worn Coaches Jersey

"I was the best baseball player I ever saw," said Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays, who never lacked confidence. Many baseball observers would agree with Willie's assessment of his abilities. Offered is a Willie Mays signed 1978 New York Mets' game worn coaching jersey. Mays was the exemplar of the "Five Tool" player. He was a magnificent center fielder who began his career playing in the immense center field at New York's Polo Grounds when Mays broke into the Majors with the New York Giants. Mays earned a dozen Gold Glove Awards. he could run: 338 stolen bases. He could throw - witness his amazing throw after his over the shoulder grab, "The Catch," in the 1954 World Series. Mays could hit: a .301 lifetime average despite not hitting .300 in his last eight seasons when age took its toll. Willie had a lifetime OPS at a superb .940. Mays could hit with power: 660 career home runs, despite missing most of the 1952 season and all of the 1953 season because of military service. Mays played in the Majors from 1951 through 1973, with the last year and a half spent on the New York Mets. After Willie retired from playing, he became a hitting instructor with the Mets. The presented gray away jersey is polyester. "Mets" in blue lettering outlined in orange is scripted across the chest. The shirt sports two buttons from the neck to the letters. Each short sleeve is trimmed with blue and orange at the sleeve's end. The left sleeve has a blue, orange, and white Mets' patch. There are three tags, all on the inside front tail. A strip tag, the first tag, reads "42 78 24," showing the size as 42, the year as 1978 and May's number 24. The second tag shows "Rawlings" as the manufacturer, again states the size as "42", and gives washing instructions. The third tag, a flag tag, reads "Set 1/ 1978." The back of the jersey shows "24," Willie's famous number. The "24" is in blue, trimmed with orange. The jersey shows nice use. The shirt has some very small stains on the front and back. Mays has signed his name on the jersey front, just under the "Mets" lettering. Willie neatly signed in black ink from a marker. Willie Mays is considered by some experts to be the best baseball player in history, so a signed, game worn jersey Willie Mays jersey, in excellent condition, portends long term value.
