1980 Bill Mazeroski Pittsburgh Pirates Old Timers Game Award
Bill Mazeroski is a Hall of Fame second baseman who played his entire Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1956-72). Presented is a Bill Mazeroski 1980 Oldtimers Day Award given to Mazeroski on August 2nd of that year. Known as "Maz" or "The Glove," Mazeroski was an outstanding fielder. Fellow Hall pf Fame second baseman Joe Morgan referred to Mazeroski as "the gold standard" for defensive play at the keystone sack. Maz was an 8-time Gold Glove winner who was particularly adept at turning the double play. He was involved in 1,706 double plays, still an MLB record for a second baseman. As a hitter, Maz hit .260 lifetime, with 138 home runs and 853 RBIs. Mazeroski's home run and RBI totals are the highest among National League second baseman from 1944-74. A 10-time All-Star, Mazeroski is most famous for the walk-off home run he hit in the bottom of the 9th inning in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series to defeat the New York Yankees for the World Championship. Mazeroski's blast went over the left field fence at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, the only World Series Game 7 walk-off home run in baseball history. Maz was also a member of the 1971 Pittsburgh World Series winners - as he and Roberto Clemente were the only two Pirates to be on both the '60 and '71 World Series champions. The award is shaped as an octagon, with its greatest length at 17.75" and its longest width at 13". The award is mostly metal, with the base and other areas having a wooden appearance. On top on the base are three objects: 1) A clock, shaped as an octagon, 7.5" high and 5" in width at its largest point. The clock is not operative. 2) A Pittsburgh Pirates cap, in the vintage style with a pillbox top that the Pirates revived in 1976, the National League's Centennial season. The cap is approx. 10" from front to back, 6.5" across, and 4" high. 3) A light, with a removable top. The light is approx. 8" tall, and 4.75" in diameter at its top, and the light is operable. An approx. 1.25x4" plaque on the front of the award reads, "BILL MAZEROSKI/Old TIMERS DAY/ THREE RIVERS STADIUM/AUGUST 2, 1980." This offering comes from Maz's collection when he sold it through auction a few years ago. It is a unique collectible that celebrates the career of a second baseman who exhibited terrific defense and had clutch power, hitting one of the greatest World Series home runs in the annals of baseball.
