1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team Presentational Pocket Watch
A marvel from the Art Berglund Collection, this pocket watch presented to the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team literally stands the test of time. The 1980 team, comprised of a ragtag bunch of amateurs and unforgettably known as the "Miracle on Ice" team, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports by defeating the Soviet Union in the tournament's semifinal before waltzing past Finland to capture the gold medal. While at the time mired in the Cold War with the U.S.S.R., the U.S. victory over their ostensibly unbeatable foe on the ice far transcended sports; it buoyed the spirits of an entire nation due to its real-world implications and historic improbability. As a token of their tremendous achievement, these pocket watches were presented to team members and high-ranking USA team officials, with Berglund belonging to the latter group. This gold-filled Colibri pocket watch comes with a matching pen knife and chain, which adjoins the two items. The face of the watch, which is in NM condition, displays the 1980 Lake Placid logo and "XIII Winter Olympic Games" as well as "Gold Medal Winner." It comes with a wood presentation box in EX condition with "A. Berglund" engraved on a metal plaque. As this was not commercially available and presented exclusively to those affiliated with the team, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of one of the most iconic moments in sports history.
