1980s Dwight Gooden New York Mets Garment Bag
Displayed is a Dwight Gooden New York Mets' garment bag that Gooden used on road trips circa 1986. Dwight Gooden broke into the Major Leagues with the New York Mets in 1984 at only 19 years old, and he was an immediate star, becoming the National League Rookie of the Year when he went 17-9, with a 2.60 ERA and a league-leading 276 strikeouts in 218.0 innings. In 1985, Gooden was even better. He won the National League Cy Young Award and the pitchers' Triple Crown with an amazing 24-4 record, a 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts. Then in 1986, the Mets won the pennant and the World Series as Gooden finished at 17-6, with a 2.84 ERA and 200 strikeouts. Soon, Gooden's acknowledged problems with drinking and substance abuse began to surface, and he could never regain the superstar status of his early seasons. Gooden played 16 Major League seasons, 11 years with the Mets and much shorter stints with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the Houston Astros. Gooden finished with a career record of 194-112. The offered circa '86 garment bag is from the time when Gooden's career was still highly successful, and the Mets were World Champions. The attractive garment bag is in blue imitation leather, and it has a nice, soft, flexible feel. The bag is approx. 23" across and has a length of approx. 46", not including a 13" strap at the top that is meant for hanging the bag. Embroidered in orange script near the top of the bag is "Dwight Gooden." Below Gooden's embroidered name is the Mets' blue and orange logo, measuring 7.5" in diameter. The bag has two horizontal zippers, and a vertical zipper that runs from top to bottom, and all of the zippers work. The bag shows use. There are a few very tiny holes, with a diameter of approx. 0.15", near the bottom of the bag. There are also a few nicks and scratches, and a few very small areas where some of the blue finish of the bag has rubbed off and a white under color is visible. The bottom third of the bag does show some dark stains consistent with the bottom of the bag rubbing against the ground, pavement or storage areas. Overall, the bag shows use consistent with a professional baseball team's road travel. The bag recalls the days of an iconic young pitcher in an era of exciting Mets' baseball.
