1982 Tony Armas Jersey Game Worn in 1983
Presented is a Tony Armas 1982 Red Sox jersey that Armas wore during the '83 season. Armas was not on the roster in '82 as he was playing on the Oakland Athletics, and no one wore Armas' #20 on the Red Sox in 1982. It was common at that time that a player would wear a jersey from the previous season when a player was signed after the team's jerseys were ordered. Armas played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues; Pittsburgh Pirates in '76, the Oakland Athletics (1977-82), Boston Red Sox (1983-86), and the California Angels (1987-89). Armas exhibited outstanding power in his first two years with Boston as he had 36 home runs and 107 RBIs in 1983, and 43 home runs and 123 RBIs in '84. Armas was an All-Star in '81 and '84, and he won an outfield Silver Slugger Award in '84. Armas had a lifetime Major League batting average of .252, with 251 home runs. Tony Armas has a son, also named Tony Armas, who pitched for ten seasons in the Major Leagues. The white jersey has "RED SOX" in red letters with Navy blue trim across the chest. The jersey has red piping around the neck and down the front. Down the middle front are seven silver buttons. On the lower left outside tail are two tags: 1) A Wilson manufacturer's tag giving washing instructions and showing the size as "42." On the back is "20," in red block numbers with Navy blue trim. The jersey does have a few loose strings, but overall, it is in excellent condition.
