1983 NAACP Image Award Presented to Larry Holmes

1983 NAACP Image Award Presented to Larry Holmes

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) began awarding NAACP Annual Image Awards in 1967, with entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr. one of the early innovators of the awards. The prestigious awards are now given in over 40 categories. Just a few of the previous Image Award winners: Ella Fitzgerald, Colin Powell, Toni Morrison, LeBron James, Alex Haley, Venus and Serena Williams, and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Presented is the 1983 NAACP Boxing Award presented to Larry Holmes. Holmes, born in 1949, grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, a city down on its luck because the local coal mining industry was diminished. He fought for money and on street corners and in bars, turned professional and eventually won his first 48 professional fights, defeating, among many others, Muhammad Ali, Gerry Cooney, and Earnie Shavers. Holmes fought professionally from 1973 until 2002, and he became the WBC Heavyweight Champion from 1978, when he defeated Ken Norton, until 1983. Holmes was also credited with the International Boxing Federation Heavyweight Championship from 1983-85, and the Ring Magazine (Lineal) Heavyweight Championship from 1980-85. Holmes, known as the "Easton Assassin," made many comeback attempts after a number of so-called retirements, and he fought until age 52. Homes is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Eddie Murphy hosted the 1983 NAACP Image Awards, were held at the Palladium, in Los Angeles. The impressive award weighs 119.25 ounces. It stands approximately 13.5" and has an 8-inch diameter at the base. The award shows a figure, probably based on Atlas, holding up the world. Along the base of the award is engraved, "16th Annual NAACP Image Awards/1983/Sports - Boxing/Larry Holmes." The Image Award is in excellent condition, and it comes from the personal collection of Larry Holmes.
