1985 Kentucky Derby Trophy

1985 Kentucky Derby Trophy

This incredible one-of-a-kind trophy was given to Cam Gambolati, trainer of 1985 Champion Colt, Spend a Buck. It measures 9" tall and 11.5" with the base and is engraved "Kentucky Derby Trainer Cup, May 4 1985, Churchill Downs, Won By Cam Gambolati." Made of sterling silver, the bottom is stamped "Sterling Lemon & Son Louisville, KY." It weighs 15.5 ounces and consists of three parts; a base, cup, and lid. Included is a signed handwritten letter from Gambolati and this piece was obtained personally from him. Spend A Buck occupies an important place in racing history, skipping the final two Triple Crown legs after the Derby win, in pursuit of higher purses. This spurred Crown hosts to add a bonus for winning their own races to entice participants to remain in all three.
