1986 Len Bias Boston Celtics Game Issued Jersey for Preseason - Only Known Celtics Jersey

This lot features an unusual, rare Boston Celtics home (white) jersey that was manufactured by Wilson the day after the ‘86 Draft. As the story goes, Wilson Sporting Goods was trying to land a contract with the NBA to produce team jerseys. They manufactured these mesh-style jerseys for all 30 teams with the hopes that the clubs would wear them in preseason games. This was the one produced for Bias, who wore No. 34 in college, but he never wore it. The size 46 jersey includes the sewn-on Wilson washing instructions tag on the lower left front tail that has a large "34" written in black marker across it. The jersey sports green tackle twill numbers (34) on the front and back. The front numbers measure six inches tall while the back numerals are eight inches tall. The CELTICS team name is curved across the front in green tackle twill letters that measure four inches tall, while his last name (BIAS) can be found across the back of the jersey via green tackle twill letters that stretch three inches tall. Although Paul “The Truth” Pierce would wear No. 34 for the Celtics from 1999 until 2013, It was never a Celtics jersey worn by Bias. In fact, when the Celtics drafted Bias 37 years ago, they had given him jersey No. 30. Alas, he never wore that one either. The jersey shows some slight staining on the lower right side.Bias scored 2,149 points over four seasons with the Terrapins, which still ranks third in school history, and averaged 5.7 rebounds per game throughout his collegiate career. He was named the ACC Player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons. Celtics mainstays Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale were all looking forward to playing alongside Bias for years. But when Bias died suddenly, so too did big dreams for the Celtics franchise. After clawing their way back to the NBA Finals a year later, Boston would not play in another Finals until 2008.
