1986 Mike Tyson Edward J. Neil Award
Aside from a championship belt the most prestigious award given out in boxing is the Edward J. Neil Award for outstanding service to boxing. The award began in the late 1930's and continues to be awarded each year by the Boxing Writers' Association Of America. Offered here is the Edward J. Neil Award given to Mike Tyson for his service to boxing in 1986. 1986 was a signaificant year in the boxing life of "Iron" Mike Tyson. Incredibly he fought and won twelve times leading up to a title fight in November of that year. Tyson defeated the likes of Mitch Green, Mark Young, James Tillis, Marvis Frazier and Jose Ribalta to remain undefeated and on his way to a title matchup with W.B.C. champion Trevor Berbick on November 22, 1986 in Las Vegas. Tyson stopped Berbick with a spectacular second round knockout to win the World Heavyweight Title. His incredible accomplishments in 1986 culminated with the Boxing Writers' Association recognizing his accomplishments by awarding him this great award. The award is metal with an image of Edward J. Neil at the top and is mounted on a black wood base. The award reads, "THE EDWARD J. NEIL MEMORIAL FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO BOXING IN 1986 PRESENTED BY BOXING WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA TO MIKE TYSON. There are some minor nicks at the corner edges of the wood base, otherwise in fine condition. 10.5x16." Comes with a detailed letter of authenticity from Tyson's assistant manager at the time Steve Lott.
