1986 NBC Sports New York Mets Championship Press Pin
Offered is an NBC Sports press pin for the 1986 World Series that was won by the New York Mets over the Boston Red Sox. The 1986 World Series is best noted for Game 6, which began with the Red Sox holding a 3-2 lead in games. In the bottom of the 10th inning at Shea Stadium, the Mets trailed the Boston Red Sox by 2-0, with two outs and none on, with the Red Sox one strike from winning the World Series. Then Gary Carter singled and pinch hitter Kevin Mitchell singled Carter to second. Then Ray Knight singled in Carter, with Mitchell taking third. Bob Stanley was brought in to face Mookie Wilson. A wild pitch scored Mitchell, tying the game, and Knight advanced to second. Then, with two strikes, on the tenth pitch of the at-bat, Wilson hit a ground ball towards first base that rolled past the glove of the Red Sox first baseman, Bill Buckner, to give the Mets the victory. And the Mets won the World Series the next day. The pin is an octagon, an inch in height and an inch across. On the top of the pin is "WORLD SERIES," and the bottom of the pin reads "NBC SPORTS." The two side panels together read "1986," and in the middle of the pin is "Mets," in orange script. The NBC press pin is particularly appropriate as a 1986 World Series souvenir because in the top of the tenth inning, NBC was setting up their television cameras in the Red Sox clubhouse, with bottles of champagne ready and NBC announcer Bob Costas preparing to describe the Red Sox victory celebration, a celebration that never came about. Later, Costas said that when NBC moved out their cameras when the Mets tied the score in the tenth inning, "It was like a scene change in a Broadway. In, out, gone, not a trace." The pin is in excellent condition, and it provides a fitting remembrance to an iconic World Series.
