1986 Pete Maravich Signed Check (PSA)

1986 Pete Maravich Signed Check (PSA)

Presented is a PSA slabbed signed check from "Pistol Pete" Maravich, the all-time high scorer in NCAA basketball history. Maravich was the son of Press Maravich, a big-time college coach, and young Pete spent countless hours perfecting his dribbling, driving, passing and long-range shooting. He played college basketball at Louisiana State University, on a team coached by his father. There was no three-point shot in 1967-68 when Pete began his college career and because of NCAA rules at the time, he was not allowed to play varsity ball as a freshman. In addition, college scoring was lower at that time because there was no shot clock to force more shots. Despite all of the foregoing, Maravich averaged an amazing 44.2 points a game career scoring average as the 6'5" guard led the NCAA in points for each of his three varsity seasons, more than any other college player of all-time, and he did it with flair - juking, faking, and dribbling the ball as if he had it on a string, while his trademark floppy long socks kept falling to his ankles. It has been written that former LSU coach Dale Brown calculated from college shot charts that had the 3-point rule been in effect during Maravich's college days, Pistol Pete would have averaged 12 made three pointers a game and scored an average of 57 points a contest. In the NBA, Maravich had a 10-year career that was cut short by injuries as he played for the Atlanta Hawks, the New Orleans/Utah Jazz, and the Boston Celtics. In the NBA, Maravich averaged 24.2 PPG and was a 5-time All-Star. Pistol Pete passed away at only 40 years of age when he suffered heart failure, as the result of an undiagnosed heart defect, during a pick-up basketball game. The signed check is from the St. Tammany National Bank of Covington, Louisiana. The check is printed under the name "Pete or Jackie Maravich," as Jackie was Pete's wife. The check is made out to Alfred Young in the amount of $300.00. The check was cashed by Young two days later. Maravich wrote and signed the check in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The 3x8-1/8" check is signed as "Pete Maravich." The check has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified Authentic Auto. The signed check is a valued memento from the highest scorer in NCAA basketball history.
