1988-89 Larry Roberts San Francisco 49ers Signed Game Worn Jersey (Equipment Manager LOA)
San Francisco 49ers road jersey worn by defensive end Larry Roberts during the 1988 and 1989 World Championship seasons. The jersey is accompanied by a handwritten letter signed by former longtime San Francisco 49ers equipment manager Bronco Hinek. (Hinek was the team's equipment manager from 1983 to 1998.) In his letter, dated April 2, 1990, on 49ers letterhead, Hinek writes in full: "This is to authenticate that this white size 46 Russell Athletic jersey, number 91, was worn by Larry Roberts during the 1988 and 1989 World Champion years. Bronco Hinek. Equipment Manager." The white mesh jersey features the number "91" on the front, reverse, and each sleeve. All numerals have been silk screened in red paint. A "Russell Athletic size 46" label appears on the left front tail. Roberts has inscribed the jersey, "Larry Roberts #91," in black ink (grading 5/10) on the reverse numeral "1." The jersey displays several customizations. The front collar has been cut and resewn, while each sleeve has been trimmed and elasticized. Considerable wear is displayed throughout, including several team repairs and scattered staining. Roberts, who was a second round pick of the 49ers in the 1986 NFL Draft, played for eight consecutive seasons in San Francisco. He was starter for the club in both Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV, each of which ended in a 49er victory. This is an outstanding, well-worn 49ers jersey dating from one of the most successful periods in franchise history.
