1988 Lou Gehrig Bronze Statue by Noted Sculptor R. P. Daus

1988 Lou Gehrig Bronze Statue by Noted Sculptor R. P. Daus

Lou Gehrig bronze, mounted upon a marble base, created by noted sculptor R. P. Daus. The classic image captures the legendary "Iron Horse" in his follow through swing. The title of the piece, "Grand Slam," is engraved along the edge of bronze base, while the opposite edge of the bronze base is engraved "The Pride of the Yankees." Daus has signed the base next to a 1988 copyright date. A limitation number, reading "2 of 50," is also engraved on the edge of the base. This bronze was originally sold in 1988 with a retail price of $2,000 (we know that because we have seen advertisements for it in the pages of The Sporting News at the time). Interestingly, we have seen a few variations of this bronze regarding the base, which suggests that they were cast "on order." If that is so, then it is possible that far fewer than fifty were produced. That would not surprise us, given its rarity. This is just the fifth example we have ever offered and we have seen few others at auction in the past thirty-five years. The bronze measures 15.5 inches in height (including the marble base) and is 11.5 inches long at its widest point. Near Mint condition. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
